UnHuh, UnHuh

I added a new catagory to the site, Year of Yup’ik, to go along with posts of the planning for Alaska, as well as the actual year we will be up there.

To make a long story slightly shorter, brandus interviewed at the large teaching hiring fair up here at the University of Northern Colorado. He interviewed with about fourteen districts, including one in Florida, one in Virgina, and the Lower Yukon School District in Alaska.

The pay is very good, and the chance to live in Alaska for a year, in a town of mostly Yup’ik peoples was too exciting to pass up.

And then, as they were drawing up his contract, they asked about family. He mentioned I was a sped, and they offered me a job on the spot, without ever having met me other than over the phone.

I went in to talk to them, brandus and i discussed it, and with the money and the opportunity, we decided to go.

We will be living in the town of Kotlik, Alaska, which has about 200 students. About 15 of those are kids with special needs, so I have a very small caseload.

Im nervous about going back to teaching, but this will be completely different from anything else Ive ever done.

We’re both really excited, and we have so much to do before we leave in August.

Plans and budgeting and concerns will be posted throughout in the planning stages. After that, I would like to keep a really good record of the experience.

Feel free to ask anything that occurs to you, and I will try to answer. Right now, we have about fifteen questions that we will be emailing off to our principal soon, so anything that i havent considered would be appreciated.

Further details forthcoming.

In The House

The new job, which i started about a month and a week ago, continues to make my brain melt.

im working in housing. apartments, leases, all that.

the first two weeks? it was great, fabulous, no problem. my boss was cool, the job wasnt too stressful or painful or even taxing.

and then?

my boss gets a new job. in another county.

so, im doing MY job, which i barely know how to do, and HER job, which i dont know how to do AT ALL.

and the office is a whole set of insanity.

the other day? my boss and i went to dairy queen. she said, “im going,” i said, “oh, me too,” and someone else said, “get me a sundae.”

so, we went.

at the end of the day, my boss got called down by the big boss.

“Next time you go to dairy queen, remember to invite everyone.”

yes. really.

one of the other coworkers WENT TO THE BOSS AND COMPLAINED. because we didnt ask her if she wanted ice cream.

Where the hell am i working?

Damn It South Dakota

Seriously, the stupidity is spreading.

So, it started with South Dakota, banning any and all abortions.

We wont discuss the one “exception” that was offered, because it makes me so angry i could spit.

But now, lets all go read the bill that Georgia offers to ban abortion.

now, abortion is a highly controversial topic, and if you dont agree with me, thats fine.

but, jeeze, READ the stupidity in this bill!

Abortion results in increased tobacco smoking…Abortion exploits women, treating them and their children as mere property, and abortion is contrary to feminist values…

*grimace*

I just…gah.

I love how numbers from studies are quoted, but the studies arent named or made available. and its “one study says,” not, “repeated studies show.” as far as im concerned, in all my fun years of research papers, one study doesnt prove a damn thing.

look, i might not ever get an abortion, never even really think about it, for ME. but thats ME and i wont make decisions for the rest of the world.

write your reps and your senators, like im about to do. i dont care that i live in colorado now. i grew up in Georgia, and i cant just let this time pass. i didnt say anything about South Dakota, and i wish i had. obviously, it started a trend.
